My Own Little Peace Of Paradise
It’s pretty difficult to get any kind of garden growing in a yard that’s home to two big dogs, so my husband and I decided to convert about a third of the front yard into our garden.
The motivation was, actually, to get a tree in the front to shade my west facing office window. Productivity always suffered in the summer, when temperatures in my office would soar to the upper 80s. And installing an air conditioner just wasn’t an option.
The tree, a corkscrew willow, was started from a bit of branch about 14 inches long, and 1/4 inch in diameter. Fast growing trees, we knew it would still be several years before we started getting any real shade. That first year, most of the plantings were sun-loving annuals.
Except for the echinacea. My husband saw one at Costco and just had to have it. That led to several more, even though we knew that in a few years, the area would be too shady for them to thrive. I do believe we got our money’s worth out of them anyway, in pure enjoyment.
